Dear Khodadad,

I agree completely with this post. Oliver Stone's work is not bad as a whole, and he certainly understands American society and politics, and although his views on America may be contested, but no one can say that there he doesn't know what he is talking about.

It is a seriously problematic issue however, that everyone and their cousin think they can comment on matters that are beyond their area of research and understanding. You, Khodadad, can best atest to the fact that commenting on ancient history is not something one can do without years and years of loving, tough and dedicated research, particularly when one has no background in it.

But in the highly political atmospher of today's America, there is a race to blame one another of being neocons.
Along these lines, I read an article from Mr. Trita Parsi saying that Alexander of Macedonia was an archeotypical neocon.
But what I have tried to express for a while now is the fact that it is absolutely not true that one side of the American politial spectrum is good while the other side is evil, and in fact quite often those who have a reputation of being "liberals" and good guys and on the side of the mostaz'afin can in the final analysis be shown to be the most ethno and Euro-centric ones who tend uncritically to write off all that comes from our neck of the woods Euro-idealistically and with no sensitivity towards the specifics of what they try to fit into their generalized political theories...

Oliver Stone is in fact a committed liberal and has perhaps used his film to polemitically attack what he doesn't like, the shorthand for which everywhere seems to be "neocon." But through what he has produced, he has effectively shown that not all whom the kind hearted goody-goodies categorize as friends, do indeed respect others, as these others want to be respected.

I think that you are right, Khodadad, the failure of Alexander at the box office has nothing at all to do with the "gayness" of Alexander. Besides, only a minority of movie goers are fundamentalists. I am glad that you mentioned Philadelphia, it was a really excellent film. I am sure that Alexander's "gayness" had little to do with his historical accomplishments. If I understand the behavior of ancient aristocratic Greeks correctly, engaging in homosexual affairs was the norm for these men, not the exception. This being the case, Alexander's contemporaries probably did not perceive his behavior to be particularly abberant. I suppose that telling the story of Alexander should include some information about his private life, however, Mr. Stone should have placed this in the larger context of Alexander's role as a major force in ancient history and not made it a central theme of the movie.

I suppose that when you're high and mighty like Stone believes he is, you become a little less tolerable of criticisms and have a skewed vision of reality. Hollywood has a tendency to purport such visions.
