Space

It's a good thing we have spaces between our words. Otherwise, mistakes could happen:

Have an ice day...

May I have a nice cream please?

How did the Romans manage? Latin words did not have any spaces.

An extremely clever observation, my dear Watson!

Hmmm, I took Latin for three years in High School and I never learned that Latin was written without any spaces between the words. However, I know that the words all had a somewhat complicated system of endings (masculine, feminine, neuter, etc.) as I am sure you know. Perhaps it was the word endings that delineated the beginning and ending of the words.

Btw, did you notice my question about your previous post?

Here's a theory:
They were probably wiser. since they didn have the electrical facilities they had to use their brains more perhaps ;-) As we advanced in technology we dropped behind in case of language...

David:

Actual Latin inscriptions and texts were written without any spaces! If you ever go to Rome, look at some of them and you will see stuff like "VESPASIANVSCAESARIMPERIOROMANI" written on the stones.

About your last question. I think if you read the whole article, you will see that the writer is quite sarcastic about his quotations of Herodotus ("The idea of democracy was born in the fight against Persian despotism: that is how Herodotus tells it. ")and the way I read it, he is actually criticising the effect that Herodotus has had on the Western mind.
