Elections
Well, the long-awaited US midterm elections have come and are almost gone. Many people on campus were very happy about the results and some of my colleagues whom I had never seen being very opinionated on political issues were constantly talking about the results. It seems as if the resignation (or firing) of Donald Rumsfeld was a greater issue of debate than all the election results.
What struck me, coming from a skeptical culture which barely considers any change to be genuine, was how optimistic everyone on the left is. Most of your average Democratic supporters appear to be thiniking that they have won, that the course of the Neo-Conservative take over of the government has stopped and these wins mean that things will dramatically change. However, the Republican supporters also seem to know better and just shook their heads knowingly and smiled. I should find a Green supporter....

I am pleased with the election results, but I don't think that much will change in the short term. Iraq is still an intractable problem that has no easy solution for either political party. At least there will once again be some checks, balances, and accountability in the U.S. government, though. As for Rumsfeld, he is finally falling on his sword for the Neo-Con team. I wish they would all do the same!

My fear is that they get so screwed up in Iraq that people turn into Republicans on presidential elections again. And neo-con movement is not going to stop for sure. They are doing the same sort of brainwashing we see in Mesbah-yazdi camp in Iran. But I’m still hopeful.
