Vienna

I am finally in Vienna, up at 5:30 due to the jet lag. Got here after a horrible 22 hour journey, courtesy of UCLA Travel Office. From LA to Philly and then to Munich, where I had to take a 5 hour train ride to Vienna. Terrible, honestly, but one cannot complain...

Things are fine. My fellow Medievalists are too busy with preparing for the two day seminar we are going to have with the medievalist students of the Austrian academy. Things seem to go fine and me and a friend of mine are sharing a rather nice apartment in Vienna. Much better than a hotel! Bis spaeter...

I haven't ridden a train since I was a kid. Although they are slower than flying, I would like to ride a train again, if only for the nostalgia of the experience.

The longest trip that I ever took was from Alabama to Seoul, South Korea. I flew to Dallas, TX, then to LAX, then on to Seoul. The trip probably took at least 22 hours. It was a really long day, and the little Korean kids running up and down the aisle of the 747 precluded the possibility of a restful sleep during the final 14 hour flight. After that, I had to deal with Korean customs! Mostly, the line was very long and slow because the Koreans returning from America had every nook and cranny searched. The customs inspector gave only one of my bags a quick going over and he waved me through. He didn't even open my camera bag containing the very nice telephoto lens that I was smuggling into Korea for my friend. ;)

So are you planning to go Medieval all over some unsuspecting Viennese? They would certainly be unprepared for your devestating Sassinid fighting techniques! ;) Well, I hope you have nice time in there. :)
